The Dog Identification Group (DIG) is proposing a scheme for every dog to be identified by a microchip. It's not law yet, but all parties seem to be keen on the idea and that's a good sign. It is heartbreaking when we hear of owners who have lost their pet but the good news is microchipping greatly enhances the likelihood of a reunion, by means of technology and a small injection which most animals don't even notice is happening! Microchipping uses Radio Frequency (RFID) technology and cannot be tampered with, fade or be removed. The tiny chip is deposited between the shoulder blades and once implanted, is there for life.
The Pet Passport Scheme already stipulates that all dogs and cats entering the UK must be microchipped so in time, it is likely to be mandatory for all dog owners.
